Water heaters fail in a small number of well-understood ways, and most of them are cheap. A thermocouple, a gas control, an element, a thermostat, a relief valve — none of these is a reason to buy a new appliance, and a fifteen-minute diagnosis separates them from the one failure that is.
The exception is the tank itself. Once the shell has corroded through, there is nothing to repair; the water is coming from the vessel and no amount of work on the fittings changes that. When we find it, we say so plainly rather than selling you a repair that buys three weeks.
What usually goes wrong
Roughly in order of how often we find each one.
Sediment build-up
Rumbling, popping, slow recovery and a tank that has quietly lost a quarter of its usable volume. A flush helps; a badly neglected tank may be past helping.
Thermocouple or flame sensor
The pilot lights and then goes out. Cheap part, quick fix, and the single most common cause of a gas tank going cold overnight.
Failed heating element or thermostat
Electric tanks. Lukewarm water usually means the upper element; a fast run-out means the lower one.
Gas control valve
More expensive, and the point where the age of the tank starts to matter to the repair-or-replace maths.
Relief valve discharging
Either a failed valve, thermal expansion on a closed system, or a genuine overpressure. Never plug it — it is the safety device.
Dip tube failure
Cold water short-circuits to the outlet. You get lukewarm water and a tank that seems half its size.
Corroded fittings and connectors
A drip at the top of the tank is very often a connector or a nipple, not the tank. Worth having somebody look before you assume the worst.
A leaking tank body
The end. Water from the shell or a persistent stain at the base means replacement, and we will not pretend otherwise.
Repair or replace
There is no universal answer, but there is a straightforward way to think about it.
Under eight years, common part
Repair, almost always. The tank has years left and the part is a fraction of a replacement.
Eight to twelve years, cheap part
Repair, usually — but this is the moment to start budgeting for the replacement rather than being surprised by it.
Eight to twelve years, expensive part
A genuine judgement call. We price the repair and the replacement side by side and let you decide with real numbers.
Any age, leaking from the tank
Replace. There is no repair for a corroded shell.
Past twelve years, anything at all
Replacement is usually the better spend. The next failure is not far behind, and the second call-out is the one that floods a basement.
What you can safely check first
Some of these save you a call-out entirely, and none of them requires opening anything.
Is it only the hot side?
If cold pressure is also poor, the problem is upstream of the heater and is a different job.
Has the pilot gone out?
On an older gas unit, worth following the manufacturer's relight instructions once. If it will not stay lit, that is a thermocouple and it needs us.
Has the breaker tripped?
Electric tanks. If it trips again immediately, stop and call — a repeatedly tripping element circuit wants looking at, not resetting.
Is there water on the floor?
Shut the cold inlet valve on top of the tank straight away. That stops it filling and stops the flood getting bigger while you wait.
Is the thermostat set sensibly?
120°F is the usual recommendation. Higher scalds and costs more; much lower is its own problem.
Questions
Water Heater Repair — the questions we are asked most
Why do I have no hot water?
On a gas tank, most often a pilot or thermocouple problem, or the gas control. On an electric tank, a tripped breaker or a failed element or thermostat. All four are inexpensive repairs on a tank that is otherwise sound, which is why a diagnosis is worth having before anybody talks about a new appliance.
How much does water heater repair cost in Woodside, NY?
A thermocouple is from $185, an element or thermostat from $265, a relief valve from $245 and a gas control valve from $475, all including parts and labour. The $89 diagnostic is credited in full against any repair you approve on the same visit.
My water heater is making a rumbling noise. Is that dangerous?
It is not usually dangerous, but it is telling you something. It is water boiling under a layer of sediment on the tank floor. That sediment insulates the burner from the water, so the tank runs hotter and the steel fatigues faster. A flush helps if it is caught reasonably early.
Should I repair or replace my water heater?
Under eight years with a common part, repair. Past twelve, replacement is usually the better spend. In between it depends on the part, and we will price both so you are choosing with real numbers rather than an opinion. A leak from the tank body itself is always a replacement.
My water heater is leaking. What do I do right now?
Shut the cold water inlet valve on top of the tank — that stops it refilling and limits the damage. If it is electric, switch off its breaker; if gas, turn the control to off. Then call. A tank leak does not stop on its own and it gets worse.
Is a water heater flush worth paying for?
Annually, yes, particularly for a gas tank. It removes the sediment that shortens tank life and slows recovery. It is included on every one of our service agreements for that reason. On a tank that has never been flushed and is already past ten years, we will tell you honestly if it is too late to be worth it.
Can you repair a tankless water heater?
Yes. The common ones are scale build-up in the heat exchanger, ignition and flame-sensing faults, and flow sensors. Annual descaling in this water is not optional maintenance for a tankless unit — it is the difference between fifteen years and six.
