Water where it should not be? The emergency line is answered by a person, 24 hours a day, every day of the year — and we will talk you to your shutoff before anybody gets in a van. Call 000-000-0000
The appeal is obvious: hot water that does not run out, and a basement corner back. The catch is that a tankless unit asks far more of the gas supply and the venting than the tank it replaces, and a quote that does not mention either is a quote that will be revised on the day.
We assess the gas line size and run, the meter capacity, the vent route and the incoming water temperature before we give you a number. Sometimes the answer is that a tankless conversion is a straightforward, excellent idea. Sometimes it is that the gas upgrade costs more than the unit, and a high-recovery tank is the better buy. You get told which.
What a tankless conversion actually involves
The unit on the wall is the small part.
Gas supply sizing
A tankless heater can ask three to five times the input of the tank it replaces. Very often the existing line is too small for the run, and the upgrade is a real cost that belongs in the quote.
Venting
Sealed-combustion units vent through a dedicated route in specific materials with specific clearances. Reusing an old chimney or vent connector is not an option.
Condensate management
A condensing unit produces acidic condensate that needs a route to a drain, usually through a neutraliser. It cannot simply run onto a basement floor.
Electrical supply
Even a gas unit needs power for the controls, the fan and the ignition. That often means a new circuit.
Isolation and flush valves
Fitted at installation, always. Without them, the annual descale becomes an awkward job and therefore an unperformed one.
Honest sizing
Sized on flow rate at your actual incoming winter water temperature, not on a summer number. This is why some units disappoint in January.
Where tankless is the right answer
And where it honestly is not.
Space is tight
A wall-hung unit gives back a basement corner or a closet, which in a Queens house is worth real money.
Long or unpredictable hot water demand
A household that runs out of hot water regularly, or one with a large soaking tub.
Long expected ownership
The payback is in running cost and in a fifteen-to-twenty-year service life, both of which need time to arrive.
Not ideal: very low simultaneous demand
A small household using little hot water may never recover the extra cost over a modest tank.
Not ideal: an undersized gas service
Where the gas upgrade dominates the job, a high-recovery tank or a heat pump unit is usually the better spend.
Not ideal: nobody will descale it
In this water, an undescaled tankless unit will disappoint within a few years. If annual service is not going to happen, buy a tank.
Keeping one working
Tankless units are reliable and long-lived, on one condition.
Annual descaling
A vinegar or descaler circulation through the heat exchanger, using the isolation valves. Non-negotiable in this water.
Inlet screen and filter
Cleaned at the same visit. A blocked screen looks exactly like a failing unit and costs nothing to fix.
Venting and condensate check
Termination clear, condensate line running, neutraliser media still good.
Combustion check
Because it is a gas appliance and that is what you do with gas appliances, once a year, without exception.
Questions
Tankless Water Heaters — the questions we are asked most
How much does a tankless water heater cost installed in Woodside, NY?
A tank-to-tankless conversion starts at $4,900 where the existing gas line can carry the load, including the unit, venting, condensate management, isolation valves and commissioning. A gas line upgrade, if needed, starts at $1,200. We survey the gas and venting before quoting so the number does not move on the day.
Do I need a bigger gas line for a tankless water heater?
Very often, yes. A tankless unit can demand three to five times the gas input of the tank it replaces, and the existing line and meter were sized for the tank. This is the single most common reason a cheap tankless quote grows on installation day, and it is why we check it first.
Will a tankless heater really never run out of hot water?
It will supply hot water indefinitely, but only up to its flow rate. Size it for your actual simultaneous demand at winter incoming water temperature and it is excellent. Size it on a summer number and it will disappoint you in January when two showers run at once.
How long do tankless water heaters last?
Commonly fifteen to twenty years, roughly double a standard tank, provided it is descaled annually. Without descaling in water like ours, expect considerably less — scale in the heat exchanger is what actually kills them.
Is tankless worth it for a small household?
Often not. If you use modest amounts of hot water and rarely run out, the extra cost over a good tank may never come back. We will say so. Tankless earns its keep where demand is high or unpredictable, or where the reclaimed space genuinely matters.
Can a tankless water heater be installed in an apartment or a closet?
Frequently yes, and that is one of its advantages — but the vent route, the clearances and the condensate drain all have to work. We survey those before quoting rather than discovering them with the unit already off the van.
