The people

The people who will be in your basement

Employees rather than subcontractors, most of them here for years, and the same faces on the second visit as on the first. That is unusual in this trade and it is deliberate.

Miguel A. Salazar, Founder and Licensed Master Plumber at Woodside Plumbing Services

Miguel A. Salazar

Founder and Licensed Master Plumber

NYC Licensed Master Plumber · 33 years in the trade

Started as an apprentice on cast iron and lead in Sunnyside in 1993 and opened the Roosevelt Avenue shop in 1996. Still takes the difficult diagnostic calls himself, particularly on old house drains and buried lines, and still does the final walk on every repipe. Grew up four blocks from the shop and has now replaced water heaters for the children of his first customers.

  • House drains and buried sewer lines
  • Repiping pre-war houses
  • Difficult diagnostics

Danielle Okonkwo, Service Manager at Woodside Plumbing Services

Danielle Okonkwo

Service Manager

Journeyman plumber · 16 years

Runs the service side: the dispatch board, the service agreements and the field crews. Came up through commercial kitchen and grease work, which is where the discipline about response times comes from. The person who decides who gets seen first on the worst day of the autumn, and the reason that decision is made on need rather than on who shouted loudest.

  • Dispatch and emergency triage
  • Service agreements
  • Commercial service contracts

Rahul Menon, Installation Foreman at Woodside Plumbing Services

Rahul Menon

Installation Foreman

Journeyman plumber · 13 years

Leads the installation crews and does the fabrication in the shop, which is why an awkward transition in a pre-war basement gets a piece made for it rather than a standard fitting forced into place. Fussy about pipe support, slope and clean solder joints — the three things that decide whether a repipe is quiet and dry for thirty years or noisy and wet in eight.

  • Copper and PEX repiping
  • Water heater and tankless installation
  • Fixture and remodel rough-in

Erin Kavanagh, P.E.

Systems Engineer

Licensed Professional Engineer (NY) · 15 years

Does the fixture-unit calculations, the riser diagrams and the specifications, and works with architects on renovations and small commercial fit-outs. Joined from a Manhattan mechanical consultancy because she wanted to see whether the drawings actually got built the way they were drawn. Responsible for the fact that this company regularly tells a customer their existing stack is fine.

  • Fixture-unit and sizing calculations
  • Riser diagrams and permit drawings
  • Backflow and code review

Joy Ramos, Client Care and Dispatch at Woodside Plumbing Services

Joy Ramos

Client Care and Dispatch

9 years with the company

The voice on the other end of the phone, including at three in the morning on the emergency line. Talks people through finding their main shutoff before anybody gets in a van, which has saved more ceilings than any tool in the shop. Keeps the maintenance schedule, which is why plan holders get called rather than forgotten.

  • Emergency triage and shutoff coaching
  • Scheduling and service reminders
  • Certificates of insurance and paperwork

Working here

We train apprentices, because somebody has to

There is a genuine shortage of skilled plumbers in this city, and it is going to get worse before it gets better. The trade spent twenty years telling young people to go to college instead, and it worked.

So we take apprentices, we pay for their licensing hours, and we accept that the first two years are an investment rather than a return. Every plumber on this page except one came up that way. If you are considering the trade and you live in Queens, come and talk to us.

  • Paid apprenticeships with licensing costs covered.
  • Day rates rather than commission, at every level.
  • Seven languages across the shop, which matters in this neighbourhood.
